Meeting the Past on the Way to the Future

Life is a journey and as we go by, we may not have much time for reflection on where or how we are travelling. We live in a world that does its best to keep us hyper-busy; we hurry to work, hurry home, hurry to meetings and to the mall. All the while, we are bombarded with messages from cell-phones, ipods, advertising and other diversions. We need places for calmness and serenity now and then.

Out of the world of long ago, comes the labyrinth. Its contributions are many. Besides fresh air and exercise, it is a calming space pressing us to improve our reflective muscles. Walking the labyrinth can help us find a sense of peace, purpose and a better focus on our own needs and the needs of others.

A labyrinth is a low maintenance green space that will last for a very long time. It has no motors, batteries or moving parts. The new labyrinth, which Hospice is establishing, will be at the Civic Centre and will be available to all of us. In that beautiful setting, at your own pace, each of us can contemplate life’s beauty and meaning. We will gain fresh air and exercise as well as time for contemplation. Our new and noisy century will be at bay for 30 minutes.

Because it is a project from Hospice, the large stones placed around the perimeter will be available for memorial inscriptions. The names of founders of the community and loved ones can be cut into the stones, making the location significant for both memory and history.
